Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone from Snooky, Cambodia…….

You will know from our last blog that we have taken an apartment by the beach in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Our apartment is nice and in a great location and we are healthy and happy…..living our dream. Our apartment is part of a hotel so we have maid service and a beautiful new swimming pool. We are on the 5th floor and have an incredible sunset view nightly. If you stand on your tippy toes and breath in real deep and jump up and down….you still can’t see the ocean. We’re a 15 min walk from the downtown area where we do our marketing and a 10 min walk to the beach. The pier or dock where you catch the boats to the islands is a 10 min walk. We walk everywhere or hire a tuk tuk which is one of our favorite forms of transportation. Tuk tuks are like riding a motorcycle but much safer. There are blinds that come down and attach when it’s raining. The driver wears a rain poncho. They’re lots of fun to ride around in and slow enough so you can see everything. We just love them.

We have been to Koh Rong Samloem Island a couple of times and just simply love the place. It has the most beautiful powdery white sand beaches. The water is clean and clear which makes for a wonderful place for swimming and walking along the surf. It is a quiet peaceful place to spend a day. There are quite a few expats with bungalows and restaurants living there. There are several other islands that we will go and visit while we are here. Plus a couple of National Parks we will tour. We plan on staying in Snooky for the dry season or possibly longer which is another 5 months or so.

We have been here long enough now to have discovered some of the charms of Sihanoukville. Bali has the culture, the arts, their traditions to name a few things. Sihanoukville has it’s incredibly beautiful beaches, coastal islands to explore along with the wonderful local and expat community.  Sure there is definitely a seediness that comes along with Snooky but if you’re able to look beyond that you can have a very enjoyable lifestyle at a very reasonable cost. Like everywhere in the world, people love to complain and do nothing about it. There is a garbage problem like most 3rd world countries and people love to blame the locals. The Cambodians like to point out that we brought the garbage (plastic water bottles, take-out styrofoam containers, etc….) with us….so sad but true.

One of our favourite walks is from Snooky to Otres Beach (hippieville). It’s about a 45 min walk along a gorgeous beach. Otres Beach has the friendliest people in the area.

People watching in Snooky is very entertaining because of the different collection of people from all over the world. We have met Turks, Russians, Italians, Germans, English, Canadians, New Zealanders and the list goes on. Of course, the variety of nationalities have brought different restaurants and food in the western grocery stores. We have also found traditional Cambodian food to be quite good. David is so happy to have found a Ukrainian Restaurant. We went for lunch a few days ago and the first thing they serve you when you sit down is a small appetizer and a shot of home-made moonshine……only the Ukies. In the evenings the Ukrainian restaurant has a Ukrainian folk band.

One day we went to the market in downtown Snooky where it is extremely busy with cars, trucks and motorcycles and we saw this man and his elephant. Just amazing…..                                               (Mrs……me and ma’ elephant is goin’ to the market….can I get ya’ anythin’?)

This elephant is 50 years old and comes from Bokor Mountain once a year. The man is called the Medicine man (by the locals) and he brings natural medicines from the mountains. It is not tourist attraction, he’s just doing what he’s done for 50 years. They both will go back to nature in a few days and you won’t see them again until next year.

We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and all the best in 2017
